Denis Sassou Nguesso, President of the Republic of Congo, a leader who fights for peace
As Chairman of the African Union High Level Committee on Libya, the President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso, invited heads of African states to Brazzaville, the capital of the country, on Monday, February 5th, 2024, to discussions regarding the situation in Libya
By doing so, the President Denis Sassou Nguesso assumed the role of mediator regarding the alarming situation in Libya.
At the discussions there were present: the President of the Union of Comoros and acting President of the Africa Union, Azali Assoumani, Nigerian Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, Algerian Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui, and President of the Council of Libya, Mohammed el-Menfi.

Denis Sassou Nguesso is, in addition to his position as President of the Republic of Congo, the President of the High Level Committee of the African Union on Libya, a role he assumed with the purpose to bring to the table of discussions all the important actors involved in this matter and to resolve the crisis in Libya peacefully.

The efforts made by the President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso, appreciated by international partners, aim to solve the complex problem in Libya, but also to build up diplomatic relations between African countries.

Over time, Denis Sassou Nguesso consolidated his position as one of the most active African political leaders and gained the appreciation of Western heads of state and government. He had official meetings with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, with the current President of the USA, Joe Biden, but also with the former Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel.

In recent years, some of President Denis Sassou Nguesso's diplomatic actions have been directed towards resolving the crisis in Libya through consensus and negotiation. His mediation efforts for peace and stability on the continent have been appreciated at the highest level, including by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.
