An article published on June 20 of this year in the reputable French publication Le Monde raised serious diplomatic problems for France in Madagascar.

According to the article, the incumbent president of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, fraudulently ran for the 2018 presidential election and illegally holds the office of president of the state, as he does not have Malagasy citizenship, having obtained French citizenship upon request.

The Constitution of Madagascar stipulates in Article 46 that every candidate for the position of President of the State must prove Malagasy citizenship, and Article 42 of the Constitution makes it very clear that once a Malagasy citizen voluntarily opts for another citizenship, he loses his Malagasy citizenship.

France embroiled in diplomatic controversies – supports Andry Rajoelina who ran for office by defrauding the Constitution and is illegally occupying the office of President of Madagascar

According to documents published by Le Monde, Andry Rajoelina together with his wife and three children applied for and received French citizenship in November 2014.
Rajoelina's main opponent and possible front-runner, according to opinion polls, in Madagascar's November 2023 presidential election, Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, told Newsweek:

"The moment he chose to lie about the French citizenship he obtained at request, President Rajoelina betrayed the Malagasy people, and he must be suspended immediately and not be allowed to betray the people a second time by running for the presidential elections.

The Constitutional Court must take an attitude towards the serious violation of the Constitution. Rajoelina killed democracy and turned Madagascar into a dictatorship, banning the right to free speech and public demonstration of politicians and arresting journalists."

TV5 correspondent, journalist Gaelle Borgia, mentioned in a recent interview with TV France 24 that the president has lost his legitimacy, given the constitutional provisions that state in article 42 the loss of Malagasy citizenship by obtaining French citizenship upon request and through simplified procedure.

This fact shows that France, which was the colonizing state of Madagascar, did Rajoelina a favor because they still have interests in the Mozambique channel, in this case the territorial dispute over the Scattered Islands, the president having a double speech and hypocrisy, pretending to the Malagasy people that he wants to recover that territory.

France’s attitude is peculiar, since president Macron just affirmed his support for Rajoelina during his visit at the Elysee Palace in early June.

Currently a parliamentary commission of inquiry is being established with the purpose to address the issue and dismiss the president, considering the situation of flagrant violation of the Constitution he has committed.

Rajoelina brought the country into an unprecedented constitutional crisis, Madagascar heaving at the helm an illegitimate president. His recent response to this crisis was unsatisfactory, based on emotional arguments, lacking explanations with legal basis.
